Ninth Circuit Civics Essay and Video Contest in USA

The 2016 Ninth Circuit Civics Contest is now open. Entries will be accepted no later than 15 April 2016. Eligible candidates should be high school students from one the states listed below. The amount of the award is ranging from $500 to $2,000. To apply, the contestants are required to submit their essay and video by the deadline.

Scholarship Description
The 2016 Ninth Circuit Civics Contest is sponsored by the Ninth Circuit Courts and Community Committee and the federal courts of the western United States. The contest is open to sophomores, juniors and seniors in public, private and parochial high schools and home-schooled students of equivalent status. The theme of the contest is the United States Supreme Court’s landmark 1966 decision in Miranda v. Arizona. The Ninth Circuit contest awards cash prizes to the top three finishers in both the essay and video competitions.

Award Value
Prize amounts will be $2,000 for 1st place, $1,000 for 2nd place and $500 for 3rd place.

Level and Area of Studies
High school level in any subject.

Place of Study
In Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, the U.S. Territory of Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Eligibility and Criteria

  • The contest is open to high school students in one of the states above.
  • Sophomores, juniors and seniors attending public, private, parochial and charter schools and home-schooled students of equivalent grade status are invited to participate.
  • Videos may be submitted by an individual or by teams of up to 3 students. A student may be involved in the production of only one video.
  • Children of employees of the federal courts are not eligible to participate.

Applicants’ Nationality
The U.S citizens may apply this scholarship.

Application Instruction
To apply, students are required to submit essays and videos through this online system at the link below. Please note, the contest has two components as follows:

  • Individual students can express their thoughts and ideas in an essay of 500 to 750 words
  • Individual students or teams of up to three students may submit a 2-3 minute video presentation on the theme. Students may participate in one or both competitions
