Loreen Arbus Scholarship Program

Entries for the Loreen Arbus Scholarship are now invited. This scholarship is supported by the Loreen Arbus Foundation and the Alliance for Women in Media Scholarship. The award will be given to female students pursuing undergraduate or graduate degree in the field of communications or media. To apply, applicants must write on essay based on the given topic.

Scholarship Description
The Loreen Arbus Foundation and the Alliance for Women in Media Scholarship provides a deserving female communications/media undergraduate or graduate student with a scholarship to their educational institution. This Loreen Arbus Scholarship serves to fund a promising student’s education as well as to focus on the needs, achievements, contributions and stories of citizens with disabilities. The winning essay will be featured on the AWM website.

Award Value
The winner of the Loreen Arbus Scholarship will be awarded $2,500 and a ticket to attend the Gracie Awards Luncheon June 26, 2019, in New York City.

Level and Area of Studies
Undergraduate and graduate degree in communication or media fields.

Place of Study
The study will be taken at any accredited college or university in the United States.

Eligibility and Criteria
This Loreen Arbus Scholarship is open to any female undergraduate or graduate student attending an accredited college or university in the United States in the fall of 2019. Those pursuing a media career in an area such as cable, television, radio, digital media, publishing, journalism, advertising, production, creative design, or others are especially encouraged to apply.

Applicants’ Nationality
The citizens of the United States are invited to apply.

Application Instruction
To apply, students must write a 750 to 1000-word essay based on the writing prompt, “Disability is not Inability.” Please consider the following questions when creating the piece:

  • In what ways has a particular individual and/or people with disabilities in general persevered to embody the phrase above?
  • What obstacles (physical, mental, etc.) do people with disabilities face? Is this on a daily basis or in a particular activity?
  • What universal lessons can be learned from the perseverance and determination of individuals with disabilities? From an individual?
  • CONSIDER: In what way(s) do you want the essay/narrative to affect or change the viewers’ attitude toward people with disabilities?

In addition, students must provide a letter of recommendation from a professor or journalism/media/communications professional and a p roof of enrollment via a copy of your student id or transcript.
